Omaha Nebraska's Old Market District - a Great Place to Visit
boutiques, galleries, fine dining restaurants, and places for nightlife as well.
This place is historically magnificent. The streets are brick paved, which invite visitors to walk around a little, casually roam around and listen to the musicians on the street play. It is even possible to tour the Old Market in an horse drawn carriage! Another interesting option being, 'Ollie the Trolley'. Starting from Harney Street, the 'historic district' goes all the way to Jackson, and to 10th and 13th streets. Since 1979, this place, Omaha's Old Market, has been one on the list of the National Register of Historic Places.
If you're looking for a place to eat, then you've definitely come to the right place. For thirty five years now, The French Café has been an essential piece of the Old Market. It truly sets the standards for fine dining. The completely casual, and quite a contrast to the afore mentioned restaurant is Zio's Pizzeria. It is, however, no less frequented. There is a Mexican restaurant as well, it is located in the Old Market Passageway and is called 'Trini's'. These are just a few of the twenty some other eating places here. Whatever your stomach may desire can be found here.
The Old Market has a variety of options when it comes to dining, and does not shy away from the same when it comes to Nightlife. U2 chose the Dubliner Pub as the host of their Official Fan Party. Even though the band does not frequent the Dubliner Pub them self, this Irish pub has live music performances on Fridays and Saturdays as well. On Tuesday night, Joe Cole stages a comedy magic show at Upstream Brewing Company which is rather entertaining! It is a historically renovated, dawn of the modern times looking firehouse.
There is no dearth of shops in this area either. The best part is that it caters to both, power shoppers and casual browsers as well. The place is no less charming and inviting than any modern retail space in Omaha. There are certain stayed favourites that include Homer's Music, Tannenbaum Christmas Shop, New bookstores, Used Bookstores, Clothing Stores, Antique Emporiums, Red Square and City Limits (for anything Russian).
Other places that are worth your time, and are not too far away either are the Durham Museum, which now inhabits the earlier Union Pacific Railroad Station, the Orpheum Theater, the Holland Performing Arts Center, and the Joslyn Art Museum.
